Description
The Scots Pine is a native conifer and is a medium to tall growing tree with grey green needles. The red-brown bark of the Scots pine is also very attractive, particularly in the evening sun. In forest situations the tree grows straight with a top canopy but when allowed to grow in the open, the tree is split into shapely tiers.
This is one of the most wildlife friendly conifers and provides excellent nesting sites while it's pine cones are one of the native red squirrels favourite foods.
The Scots pine is well suited to poor soils, either wet or dry. They will prefer acid conditions but also grow well in alkaline situations. I have always been amazed by these trees, you will see them growing in sand dunes by the sea with brackish groundwater or in the middle of a bog.
